Appearance: Small midge-like flies. Size: less than 16mm. Infestation Locations: These pests are airborne, so no space is completely safe from these pests. However, areas with stagnant water and heavy vegetation are particularly prone to infestation. Risks: Primary risks are painful, itchy bites. However, mosquitos are known vectors for dangerous diseases, including West Nile Virus. About Mosquitoes have been in North America since the Cretaceous time period. There are approximately 2,700 species of mosquitoes. 176 of those species are found in the United States. The females are the ones that bite, and they find their hosts primarily by sight. Mosquitoes are attracted by movement and the inferred radiation emitted by warm bodies. They also track their hosts by using the chemical markers of carbon dioxide and lactic acid. Bigger people are more attractive to mosquitoes. They are a bigger visual target, and usually produce more CO2 and lactic acid. Active and fidgety people also tend to produce more CO2. Strangely enough, mosquitoes tend to be attracted to blondes over brunettes and women over men. Even stranger, both Limburger cheese and smelly feet attract mosquitoes! Control These are some steps you can take to control mosquitoes in your area: drain and remove areas where stagnant water can collect, such as old tires and holes. Take steps to limit the growth of heavy vegetation. For more control please contact DLM Pest Control and we will be happy to discuss our mosquito abatement programs.
